![]() ![]() It’s strange for the company to brag about how the upcoming deal will involve postpaid service while neglecting to mention that a major feature people associate with postpaid service is missing. 160K views, 220 likes, 7 loves, 104 comments, 50 shares, Facebook Watch Videos from Metro by T-Mobile: Switch to MetroPCS and get four lines of unlimited high-speed data for just 100. T-Mobile’s statements are a bit disingenuous. While T-Mobile’s Essentials plan is postpaid, it does not include high-priority data. ![]() Notably, postpaid service is likely to come with high-priority data during congestion. ![]() Postpaid plans tend to have features that prepaid plans do not. Unlike T-Mobile, both Visible and Cricket include taxes in the $100 list price of their four-line plans. Other prepaid carriers have offered similar deals in the past. Prepaid brands Visible and Cricket offer four lines for $100. Note how the caveat word “postpaid” shows up in each of T-Mobile’s boasts. Sprint previously offered its Unlimited Kickstart plan for $25 per line. As in, unlimited high speed data at this price has never been offered before for everyone in postpaid wireless in the history of ever.ĭespite T-Mobile’s claims, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen postpaid unlimited plans at this price point. The plan comes with unlimited calls, texts, and 5G and 4G LTE data. For example, Xfinity’s Unlimited plan offers 20GB of deprioritized data, followed by unlimited data at the equivalent of 3G speeds. This price point for unlimited postpaid is unheard of. The Essentials 4 Line Offer costs 100 per month, working out to 25 per line per month. But there are a few unlimited data plans providing an allotment of deprioritized data each month and, if you use up that allotment, the rest of the month you’ll be on unlimited 3G data. For example, Verizon’s Unlimited Welcome plan offers users unlimited deprioritized data 100% of the time. ![]() The cheaper unlimited data plans offer only deprioritized data. To sweeten the deal, MetroPCS is offering free phones for each line of service, minus sales tax. That's 40 less than four lines of unlimited used to cost on MetroPCS. Keep in mind that most wireless customers use less than 10GB of data per month and that the vast majority of people won’t know the difference between premium and deprioritized data. The T-Mobile prepaid brand announced today that they're offering four lines of unlimited talk, text and data for 100-taxes and fees included. For example, AT&T's Unlimited Extra plan provides 50GB of premium data followed by an unlimited quantity of deprioritized data. Typically that means you’ll have an allotment of premium data (say 25GB each month) and, after your premium data is spent, you’ll get unlimited deprioritized data for the rest of the month. This can slow your data speeds by up to 30% until the network you’re on frees up, but for most people, this drop in speed is actually unnoticeable.ģG data: also called 600kbps data, means that your data has access only to 3G network speed (or the equivalent). With premium data, you’ll get the very best network coverage T-Mobile can deliver without worrying about your speeds and coverage dropping for any reason other than poor signal.ĭeprioritized data: also called basic data, means you’ll have access to 5G and 4G network speed like premium data, but if the network gets too congested (too many users on the same network at the same time), you’ll experience temporarily slower data speeds. Premium data: also called priority data or high-speed data, gives you the best 5G or 4G network speed a carrier can deliver wherever you are. You should be aware of three different types of data: premium data, deprioritized data and 3G data. Unfortunately, just because a plan says “unlimited” doesn’t always mean the data you use is truly unlimited. ![]()
